MICROTUBES

Microtubes are one of those variations that are greatly underrated, because they can be incredibly effective—almost surprisingly so. Megan Boyd was most likely the first person to introduce this type of fly to the market before 1940, known as the Megan Boyd tube. This is essentially the same fly we know today as the Black & Blue microtube.

She believed this fly should be used on bright, sunny days when water levels are low, paired with the smallest possible silver treble hook. I fully agree with her on that.

There are many variations of flies that have been adapted into microtube form. In recent years, a new generation of microtubes has emerged, and I have to say—they are among the strongest tools we have. These are steel microtubes, and their strength lies primarily in how they sink just below the surface and into the current.

At one point, I was guiding in the Norðurá river, and my clients and I had the Dalur stretch. Conditions were difficult—bright sun, dry weather, and low water. However, there was a slight breeze that made things more manageable.

One rod went upstream, and I stayed with the other at Fitjabakki. For some reason, we started with a Hairy Mary microtube. After about an hour, I suggested calling the other rod—because we already had enough action where we were. We had landed 11 salmon on the same fly.

They joined us shortly after, and I gave them the exact same fly. By midday, that rod had landed seven salmon. So that morning at Fitjabakki produced 18 salmon on the same microtube.

There wasn’t much left of it afterward—just a few strands and some hackle.

So, is the microtube the solution?

Yes and no. But it is a fantastic addition to your fly box, and I strongly recommend having a few.
