Leaders are a Religion – Here is What Works for Me
Whenever I am asked which leaders I use, I know I’m stepping into a potential minefield. The reason is simple: Leaders are a religion. What one angler considers “fishy” or essential, another might find completely useless.
Experience, however, has taught me the value of consistency. Why change what has proven its worth over decades of hard use? Here is the setup I trust when I’m on the water.

Guideline Power Strike – Tapered Leaders
When it comes to tapered leaders, I stick almost exclusively to one brand. They offer the perfect turnover and reliability across all conditions:
- Double-handed rods: 15ft Guideline Power Strike.
- Single-handed rods: 12ft Guideline Power Strike.
I always carry a selection of Power Strike tippet spools as well, allowing me to adjust my setup depending on the specific beat or river conditions I’m facing.
Maxima Chameleon – For the Rough Stuff
Then there is the good old “Brown Maxima.” It is my absolute go-to when fishing over jagged, rocky bottoms. In my opinion, this is the best material available for these conditions; its abrasion resistance is legendary. I have personally “horsed” fish around sharp rocks with Maxima that would have snapped any other material.
“This is my personal philosophy. Others will have their own preferences, and that’s as it should be—after all, it’s a matter of faith.”
To be clear, these are the tools that suit my style of fishing. I’m not disparaging other brands; I simply stick to what I know and trust. If it isn’t broken, why fix it?
Ultimately, every angler must choose the gear they believe in and feel comfortable with. That is what truly matters.
